About the role 

The Safety & Wellbeing (S&W) Governance Officer plays a key role in supporting the effective governance, and continuous improvement of the City’s Safety Management System (SMS). This position ensures compliance with legislative requirements and internal standards while promoting best practice in workplace health, safety, and wellbeing. Working collaboratively across the organisation, the role supports consistent implementation of safety systems and fosters a strong safety culture across all teams.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the City’s Safety Management System (SMS), ensuring alignment with legislative obligations and NAT audit requirements.​
  • Develop, review, and maintain Safety & Wellbeing (S&W) procedures, standards, and supporting documentation that meet organisational needs and compliance requirements.​
  • Coordinate and facilitate meetings, workshops, and consultation sessions to support the development and review of documentation and safety initiatives.​
  • Collaborate proactively with internal stakeholders, including the S&W team, other branches, and business units, to ensure consistent implementation and ongoing enhancement of S&W systems, processes, and procedures.​
  • Conduct research, interpret findings, and analyse data to inform and develop evidence-based recommendations.​
  • Collect and assess information to evaluate compliance with relevant legislation, city policies, and procedural requirements.​
  • Prepare and present reports, dashboards, and other communications using various formats, including graphical and visual presentations tailored to diverse audiences.​
  • Provide advice and support to internal City personnel regarding the SMS and related governance requirements.​
  • Engage in benchmarking activities with other government and comparable organisations to identify opportunities for improvement and adopt best practices.​
  • As part of the broader Safety & Wellbeing team, the S&W Governance Officer also contributes to branch initiatives and supports the development of strategies that enhance overall employee wellbeing and safety. ​

We’re looking for people who have: 

  • Diploma of Work Health and Safety or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5 years demonstrated experience in similar role
  • Proficient in Microsoft suite
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of safety management system processes, procedures and supporting documents
  • Thorough technical knowledge of current WHS legislation, its interpretation and application
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse complex issues, conduct thorough research, develop well-informed recommendations, and manage intricate situations through to resolution
  • Excellent communication, relationship management, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Highly effective written communication skills
  • Strong influencing, consulting and facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise, plan and organise self and others to meet organisational objectives and deadlines in a busy and dynamic environment
  • Usability Mapping training and experience highly desirable
  • Passion for promoting safety, wellbeing, and a positive workplace culture
