The Department Finance business unit plays a critical role in supporting the delivery of high-quality services to the Gold Coast community. We provide trusted financial advice, reporting, and analysis to enable informed decision-making across Council. Our work ensures strong financial governance, accountability, and sustainable management of public funds that support a growing and vibrant city.
About the role
The Senior Accountant operates under limited direction and is responsible for delivering professional financial management and business services across at least two departments. This role provides specialist advice and support in financial accounting, compliance, reporting, and analysis, and contributes to the development and implementation of financial policies, procedures, and operational practices.
You will play a key role in supporting accurate financial reporting, maintaining the integrity of financial systems, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, accounting standards, and Council policies. The role also influences operational outcomes, provides guidance to staff, and may coordinate significant financial activities or projects.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering accurate and timely financial services, including reconciliations, reporting, and financial analysis
- Preparing, reviewing, and maintaining budgets, workpapers, and supporting documentation for audit and statutory reporting requirements
- Ensuring compliance with Council business rules, policies, relevant legislation, and accounting standards
- Coordinating and monitoring financial processes, including journals, system maintenance, and transactional activities
- Supporting the collection, coordination, entry, and review of financial and budgetary information
- Providing expert financial advice and support to management and staff on complex financial matters
- Maintaining accurate financial information within Council systems and contributing to strong financial governance
- Supporting the development and continuous improvement of financial policies, procedures, and work practices
- Building and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Managing competing priorities to deliver agreed financial outcomes within required timeframes

We are looking for a motivated and detail-focused finance professional who thrives in a collaborative and fast-paced environment. You will bring strong technical accounting skills, a commitment to accuracy, and the ability to provide clear and practical financial advice.
You will also demonstrate:
- Experience in financial accounting, reporting, budgeting, and reconciliation processes
- Strong understanding of compliance requirements, accounting standards, and financial governance frameworks
- The ability to interpret financial data and provide meaningful insights to support decision-making
- Experience working with financial systems and reporting tools (e.g. SAP or similar)
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to communicate financial information clearly
- Well-developed organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities
- A proactive approach to identifying process improvements and supporting continuous improvement
