Multiple School-Based Traineeships Available
This School Based Traineeship opportunity is designed for Year 11 students, providing the chance to gain paid, practical experience while completing secondary education.
Whyalla City Council is currently offering six (6) school-based traineeships, available across a number of business units. These traineeships are scheduled to conclude in July 2027 and provide the opportunity to build a strong foundational skill set for your future.
As part of this recruitment:
- Four (4) traineeships are open to all eligible applicants.
- Two (2) traineeships are identified for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, as part of Council’s commitment to increasing First Nations representation and creating meaningful employment pathways.
School-based traineeships are available in the following business units of Council:
- City Development
- Childcare
- Tourism
- Corporate Services
- City Operations (Open-Spaces)
These traineeships give you hands-on experience in your chosen field, allowing you to build a strong foundation for your future career.

What you can expect to do:
As a trainee, you will gain practical skills in a supported work environment. Study and gain a Certificate in the area of expertise and continue to complete your SACE. You’ll assist your team to undertake the responsibilities associated with the business unit you are working in.

- Be reliable and attend work and training as scheduled
- Communicate respectfully with your supervisor, team members and customers
- Follow instructions, workplace rules and safety requirements
- Take responsibility for your work, your learning and your behaviour
Essential Criteria:
- A positive, can‑do attitude and a willingness to learn
- Commitment to completing your traineeship alongside your SACE
- Good communication skills, including listening and asking questions when unsure
- Ability to work well as part of a team
- Basic problem‑solving skills and a willingness to ask for help when needed
- Reliability, including turning up on time and being prepared for work and training
- A non-prohibited South Australian Working with Children's Check, or ability to obtain prior to commencement
