About the Garvan Research Foundation

The Garvan Research Foundation is the marketing and fundraising arm of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and was established in 1981 to provide support to the Institute’s medical research programs. Garvan Research Foundation’s income has grown from a fundraising base of $110,000 in its first year to more than $20 million in 2013. The remarkable success of the Foundation’s awareness campaigns and fundraising activities allows Garvan’s scientists to continue contributing to knowledge which will ultimately lead to earlier diagnosis, better disease management, new therapies and prevention or cure of a range of diseases.

Garvan Research Foundation is currently growing its team to achieve an ambitious five-year strategic plan called Garvan 2020.

The Opportunity

The Philanthropy Relationship Manager – Trusts and Foundations is a vital position within the Garvan Research Foundation supporting the Head of Philanthropy in the retention, stewardship and acquisition of ’Trusts and Foundations’ (e.g. trusts, foundations and Private Ancillary Funds) as well as providing specialised support and customer care expertise to the overall Foundation.

A large part of this role will be the routine development and submission of targeted funding applications and proposals however best results will come from the stewardship and cultivation of relationships with the Founders, Directors and Trustees of trusts, foundations and Private Ancillary Funds (i.e. building relationships with individuals).

 Key responsibilities will include:

  • Raise philanthropic funds for the organisation to specified fundraising targets
  • Write compelling funding proposals and applications that inspire support for Garvan’s research
  • Write research progress reports that communicate the impact of philanthropy on Garvan’s research
  • Participate in yearly strategic plans and projects and measure/report on success
  • Retention and stewardship of a defined segment of trust and foundation donors
  • Manage and implement Garvan’s donor recognition program
  • Engagement and cultivation of a defined segment of trust and foundation prospects
  • Provide specialised donor care/customer service expertise to the overall Foundation

You will have experience and demonstrated success in:

  • Relationship management of donors/clients and identification/cultivation strategies to attract donations/sales
  • Fundraising, trust and foundation or individual gift solicitation in the not-for-profit sector or sales/business development in the commercial sector
  • Experience with developing written applications and funding proposals for trusts, foundations and Private Ancillary Funds
  • Negotiation with and influence of internal stakeholders
  • Experience in working with database’s (Raisers Edge preferably)
  • Self-motivated, good problem solver and enjoys managing multiple tasks and goals
  • Tertiary qualifications in Fundraising, Marketing and Communications, Journalism or Science viewed favourably
