The Garvan Institute is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutions with approximately 500 scientists, students and support staff working in research programs in Cancer, Diabetes & Obesity, Immunology & Inflammation, Osteoporosis, and Neuroscience.

The ACRF facility is a high throughput sequencing and genotyping service provider with which currently consists of (5) highly driven team members. Due to rapid extension of our Mouse Genotyping Service we are seeking a Research Assistant whose main responsibilities are the analysis of meltcurve and realtime PCR results, communication with clients and setup and programming of PCRs.

In order to be successful in this position you will ideally possess the following key skills and attributes:

  • General understanding of DNA extraction, PCR setup and gel-electrophoresis
  • Experience with MS Excel, high throughput sample processing
  • Pipetting (manual or automated)
  • Mouse genotyping
  • Strong time management skills
  • An ability to be well organised and to prioritize work in a high pressured environment
  • Ability to work to a flexible roster
  • Dedication and commitment to completing the task at hand
  • Willingness and ability to concentrate for extended periods of time
  • Commitment to join a busy team and interact with colleagues and facility users
  • Flexibility and openness for learning new applications.
