An opportunity exists for an experienced research leader to join our growing organisation as the Program Head of our Injury Program. The Program Head will be responsible for leading, developing and maintaining the standing of the Institute's injury prevention program in Australia, as well as contribute to injury prevention and trauma programs globally.

This is a full-time position, but we would be willing to consider part-time for the right candidate. 

Key responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Contribute to overall Institute strategic development and management, through engagement with the Australian Executive Group, the Global Injury Program and other Institute committees
  • Lead the implementation of The George Institute's mission, strategy and objectives through operational leadership of the Injury Program in Australia
  • Ensure that research and development, research management and infrastructural support activities are congruent with world best practice
  • Develop, obtain funding for, manage and lead large-scale research projects including collaborative research and development projects
  • Oversee the development of revenue generating activities in support of such projects
  • Lead and contribute to the preparation of journal publications, media reports and other public affairs outputs
  • Contribute to local, national and international meetings of relevance to the area of injury research and develop working partnerships within relevant research networks.
  • Develop and maintain strategic business relationships to promote the Institute and ensure profitable relationships.
  • Oversee contributions to teaching and training, including the supervision of students and other teaching and examining responsibilities
  • Oversee the preparation of budgets, reports and forecasts and ensure they are presented in a timely fashion, and that budgetary targets are achieved
  • Monitor the costs and effectiveness of activities to optimize resources and maintain professional standards
  • Contribute to the formulation of new commercial initiatives, in collaboration with the George Clinical as and when required

Desired Skills and Experience


  • PhD in a relevant health related discipline, with a demonstrated strong track record in the health or academic sectors at a senior level (Associate Professor or above)
  • Experience in conducting high-quality research, independently and/or as part of a team within injury prevention or trauma research
  • Demonstrated success in achieving research funding
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in the publication and dissemination of journal publications, reports and other written materials
  • Experience in preparing peer-reviewed grant applications and success in the procurement of funding and experience in obtaining commercial research contracts
  • Adaptable and able to work in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills including experience in post graduate teaching and ability to lead change
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to think strategically with the demonstrated ability to see the big picture, yet still focus on detail


  • Demonstrated research experience in international settings 
  • Experience or knowledge of health systems nationally and/or internationally advantageous
