  • Barangaroo, Sydney CBD (Relocation to Randwick in September, 2025)
  • 2 Year Fixed Term Contract

The Opportunity: 
The George Institute’s Respiratory Group is a team of academic researchers conducting clinical trials across Australia, New Zealand and Asia with a focus on improving care for people with respiratory diseases. 

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Program Leader to join our Respiratory Program. This role will involve leading and developing a portfolio of research projects, securing funding and contributing to the strategic direction of the program as well as progressively taking on independent leadership responsibilities. 

Our ideal candidate would be a mid-career clinician researcher with a strong track record in achieving independent research funding who is keen to further their research and take on a leadership role in a multidisciplinary global research organisation.

 Key Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • Maintain high level oversight of ongoing studies and contribute to all research activities within the Respiratory Program
  • Lead aspects of grant writing and submissions for new projects, secure personal research funding through competitive grants, institutional support, philanthropy and commissioned research
  • Support current projects to ensure optimal trial and execution and team engagement
  • Provide expert input during the research meetings, guide high impact publications, reports and reviews
  • Foster a productive, collaborative team culture, build strategic partnerships within and beyond The George Institute
  • Develop and maintain national and international networks to support program goals.
  • Attend project meetings, ensure research aligns with global best practices and oversee budget management
  • Model and promote TGI’s values and strategic goals in all interactions and communications
  • Participate in teaching and student supervision at TGI and UNSW
  • Collaborate across TGI regions to support team development

Skills, Knowledge and Experience/ Our Successful Candidate  

  • Relevant health/ medical qualification
  • PhD in a relevant health related discipline
  • Seasoned Researcher or Leader of a small research theme within a program
  • Experience in the management of research projects and/or clinical trials
  • Demonstrated track record in application and procurement of grants and funds
  • Experienced in writing high impact research papers
  • Experience and/or ability in people management and primary supervisor of post-graduate students
  • Advanced technical writing and oral presentation skills
  • Strong decision making, problem solving, analytical skills, and strategic thinking
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop collaborations within and external to the home organisation
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills
  • Demonstrated experience with budget proposals and development
  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook; familiar with statistical analysis programs such as R or SAS
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and enjoys working in and developing teams
  • Ability to work well and flexibly i.e. autonomously, in small teams and with a wide range of varying stakeholders
  • Ability to see the big picture, yet still focus on detail
  • Availability and willingness to travel
  • Flexibility to work non-standard hours of work for collaboration and contact with global teams based on requirements of the position
