THE POSITION
The Skilled Construction Worker (Maintenance) will work in a team, on the maintenance and construction of Council’s roads and related infrastructure.
 
Reporting to the Team Leader (Maintenance) you will:
  • Receive and act on written work orders or verbal instructions from the Manager of Infrastructure Delivery or other assigned supervisor.
  • Work as part of a Maintenance team to maintain, repair and construct unsealed road pavements, primarily through the operation of a roller.
  • Install, maintain, remove and/or replace new or damaged signs, guardrails, guide posts, fences, barriers and other temporary or permanent structures on roads, bridges, footpaths and other areas under Council's control.
  • Install, clean and repair minor drainage systems and structures such as pipes, channels, pits, culverts, surface and subsurface drains, by removing silt and debris, excavating and preparing sites, and positioning, aligning, joining and sealing pipe or culvert sections, or using other means to construct and maintain drainage devices.
  • Construct and repair concrete structures such as traffic islands, footpaths and roundabouts, using manual or mechanical means to break up and remove old or damaged concrete, prepares sites and subgrade material, sets formwork, places reinforcing steel, and mixes, pours, spreads, screeds and finishes concrete.
  • Control or remove roadside vegetation by performing activities such as mowing, slashing and trimming grass, maintaining firebreaks, lopping tree limbs, removing trees and shrubs, and spraying herbicides to control noxious / environmental weeds and minimise vegetation growth.
  • Direct the flow of traffic at work sites, including the use of stop / go signs to regulate traffic flow and maintain safety.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs to plant and equipment and assists Council's workshop staff with major services and repairs as required.
  • Assist with major road construction works when required, including control of traffic at worksites, performing routine labouring duties, and operating small to medium size plant items.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Specifically, you will have: 
 
Essential 
  • Class C driver’s licence (Car Licence)
  • Demonstrated ability to competently operate a variety of power tools and minor plant items to complete routine maintenance and construction tasks
  • An understanding of basic mechanical principles and the ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on plant and equipment
  • Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and procedures and accurately complete maintenance records and other routine forms
  • Safe Work NSW Certificate in General WHS Induction
Desirable
  • Certificate III in Civil Construction (Road Construction and Maintenance)
  • Class MR Driver's License (Medium Rigid)
  • Demonstrated ability to set out levels, erect formwork, and pour and finish concrete to a high standard using a variety of finishing methods
  • Accreditations / certificates or previous experience in:  Traffic Control; Chainsaw Operations; Chemical User Certificate; Heavy Plant operation
