THE POSITION
This position will construct, repair and/or fit metal parts and structures, and maintain, service and/or repair vehicles, plant, buildings and facilities. 
 
Reporting to the Workshop Supervisor you will:
  • Study and interpret, plans, drawings or specifications to determine job requirements and perform basic design work for metal structures such as gates, frames and rails and/or assist other trade staff or engineering staff with designs.
  • Construct and fit metal structures by measuring and cutting materials and bolting, riveting, welding, brazing or soldering materials together or to other structures.
  • Finish metal fabrication or repair work by grinding, sanding, cleaning and/or painting materials, parts and structures.
  • Assist Council's Mechanics to repair and service vehicles and plant items.  This may involve disassembling and inspecting parts for wear or other defects and replacing or repairing defective and/or worn parts.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on buildings and other facilities, including basic carpentry and joinery, basic concrete work and basic drainage work.
  • Calculate and/or estimate quantities of materials or parts required for jobs, places orders with Council's Purchasing and Procurement Officer, and collect materials from the store or local suppliers.
  • Organise specialist services, such as galvanising of metal parts, direct with suppliers or contractors.
  • Conform to regulations governing air, water and noise pollution when carrying out construction and maintenance work and bring potential breaches of regulations to the attention of the supervisor.
  • Implement traffic control plans when required at work sites, and other procedures as required to maintain safety.
 
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Specifically, you will have: 
 
Essential 
  • Advanced electric arc welding skills, including the use of MIG welders.
  • Demonstrated ability to correctly read, interpret and apply basic plans and specifications, operating instructions and written procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately calculate and/or estimate the length, quantity and area of metals and other construction materials.
  • Understanding of basic mechanical principles and the ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on plant and equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self motivated and complete projects within time frames and with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Safe Work NSW WHS General Construction Induction (White Card)
  • Class MR driver's licence (Medium Rigid).
 
Desirable 
  • Certificate III in electric welding/metal fabrication, or the equivalent.
  • Basic carpentry, plumbing and concreting skills.
