THE POSITION

This position will prepare, process and remit payments for accounts payable and maintain associated data and records in accordance with statutory and Council requirements.

 

Reporting to the Management Accountant you will:

  • Maintain awareness of relevant legislation, policies and procedures and ensure the implementation of legislative requirements and procedures within area of responsibility.
  • Undertake full end to end accounts payable processing in accordance with the relevant statutory legislation, and in accordance with Council’s policies and processes and audit requirements to maintain a high level of data accuracy and integrity.
  • Maintain physical and computerised master data for creditor records and files in accordance with Council’s policies and procedures and statutory requirements.
  • Complete supplier credit applications and submit applications to the relevant manager for authorisation. 
  • Reconcile the creditor control accounts and the creditors sub-ledger to the general ledger and reconcile creditor statements on a monthly basis and resolve all outstanding items on a timely manner.
  • Assist the Chief Financial Officer, Management Accountant, Financial Accountant in the preparation of the Business Activity Statements (BAS) in accordance with Australian Taxation Office requirements, auditing of petty cash and cash handling procedures, credit card reconciliations and preparing creditors’ journal entries.
  • Assist when required with general telephone and counter enquiries when Customer Services staff are unavailable.
  • Prepare reports as required for the Chief Financial Officer, Management Accountant, Financial Accountant, other managers and / or other organisations regarding aged payables report, creditor payments, electronic banking, GST and other relevant matters.
  • Participate in and undertake process improvement initiatives including training and coaching new or relief staff to assist them to learn aspects of the job.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Specifically, you will have:

 

Essential

  • Demonstrated commitment to high standards of customer service
  • Proven ability to deal appropriately with sensitive and / or confidential information
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Goods and Services Tax (GST) requirements
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Sound computer skills, including the design and application of basic spreadsheets
  • Sound mathematical skills and attention to detail in calculating monetary transactions 

Desirable

  • Certificate III in Business Administration or, knowledge of the administration and processing of accounts payable
  • Basic knowledge of financial accounting principles and practices
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics Financial Accounting system or any other similar Government accounting software
  • Class C (Car) Drivers Licence
