THE POSITION
The Heavy Plant Operator (Drainage) will operate heavy plant such as an excavators, trucks, rollers backhoes and skid steer loaders, and operates a variety of other small to medium sized plant and equipment, to assist in the safe and efficient construction and maintenance of Council’s drainage infrastructure.
 
Reporting to the Drainage Team Leader you will:
  • Receive and act on written work orders or verbal instructions from the Maintenance Works Coordinator, Drainage Team Leader or other assigned supervisor.
  • Operate heavy plant such as an excavator, backhoe, skid steer loader, rollers, trucks or similar to construct or maintain Council infrastructure, with a focus on  road drainage infrastructure. This includes open drains and culverts.
  • Estimate the quantities and weights of loose materials such as soil, rock and gravel, and load the correct quantities and weights of materials onto trucks, trailers or other locations.
  • Correctly install, extend or repairs pipes, box culvert units and headwalls including placing, joining, backfilling and grouting of precast products.
  • Perform routine day-to-day inspections, cleaning, maintenance and repairs to assigned plant and equipment to maximise the reliable and useful life of machines and their accessories, including checking and changing all oil levels, lubricating parts, changing filters, checking hydraulic fluids, etc. Assist Council's workshop staff with major services and repairs as required
  • Ensure that all work conforms to required safety standards, including completion of risk assessments and site-specific training for employees / contractors, installation and maintenance of signage, and implementation of Work Method Statements and Traffic Control Plans.
 
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • Ability to competently operate heavy plant to excavate, level, shape and compact work sites and trenches
  • Ability to competently operate and maintain a variety of power tools and minor plant items to complete routine maintenance and construction tasks
  • Minimum Class MR (Medium Rigid) drivers’ licence - Class HR (Heavy Rigid) is desirable
  • Safe Work NSW WHS General Construction Induction (White Card)
  • Experience in road drainage construction and maintenance would be desirable
