THE POSITION
This position will operate construction plant and equipment and perform skilled labouring work to assist in the safe and efficient maintenance and construction of Council’s integrated water infrastructure. 

Reporting to the Reticulation Team Leader you will:
 

  • Receive and act on written work orders or verbal instructions from the Team Leader Reticulation or other assigned supervisor and participate in an on-call roster as required.
  • Operate a mini excavator with or without attachments to break up and excavate materials such as soil, rock, bitumen and concrete for pipe laying and maintenance, and to level and shape work sites in accordance with levels and string lines where applicable and Hoists, moves and / or loads objects using chains and slings attached to a mini excavator bucket or attachments, in accordance with safe work methods.
  • Operate a variety of other mobile plant and equipment, including utilities, trucks, forklift, bobcat and backhoe in a safe and efficient manner, and carries out appropriate maintenance and safety checks before, during and after operation.
  • Perform regular inspections of assigned plant items in accordance with Operator’s Manuals and Council's Vehicle User and Maintenance Log / Plant Start Up Checklist and reports all defects to the workshop supervisor to arrange for maintenance and repair work and assists Council’s workshop staff with major services and repairs as required.
  • Use levelling equipment to set out levels to the standards and specifications given in engineering plans.
  • Install and repair water and sewage reticulation systems and water meters, including services to domestic and commercial premises.
  • Ensure that all work conforms to required safety standards, including completion of risk assessments and site-specific training for employees / contractors, installation and maintenance of signage, and implementation of Safe Work Method Statements and Traffic Control Plans.
  • Maintain records relevant to the duties of the position, including timesheets, plant maintenance logs, job records, work request forms, private works records and safety records, etc.
  • Ensure that all assigned vehicles / plant items are properly maintained and kept in a clean and tidy condition.
  • Conform to best practice and current regulations governing air, water and noise pollution when performing work and brings potential breaches of regulations to the attention of the supervisor.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Specifically, you will have: 

  • Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and procedures and accurately complete maintenance records and other routine forms
  • Understanding of basic mechanical principles and the ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on plant and equipment
  • Ability and willingness to participate in a weekend work roster when required
  • Safe Work NSW Certificate in General WHS Induction (White Card)
  • Current Class C Driver's Licence (Car) – HR (Heavy Rigid) preferred
  • Experience in plumbing/pipe laying would be desirable
