THE POSITION 
The Ranger will implement and enforce legislation and council policies relating to the management of companion animals, ensuring community safety, animal welfare, and environmental protection. The role also includes public education and community engagement to promote responsible pet ownership.

Reporting to Manager Sustainability and Animal Services, you will:

  • Enforce the Companion Animals Act 1998 and Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021, and accompanying regulations.
  • Investigate and resolve complaints regarding companion animals, including barking, straying or aggressive behaviour.
  • Humane management of stock and wildlife on public roads and places.
  • Seize and impound uncontrolled or dangerous animals.
  • Conduct property inspections and issue notices or orders where non-compliance is identified.
  • Prepare evidence and documentation for legal proceedings and represent Council in court if required.
  • Ensure humane treatment of companion animals, stock and wildlife.
  • Monitor and support the daily operations of the Council’s Animal Shelter.
  • Coordinate the rehoming of companion animals, liaising with rescue groups and rehoming organisations.
  • Carry out microchipping and registration services.
  • Deliver community education programs on responsible pet ownership.
  • Develop and distribute educational materials, including social media content.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal incidents, impoundments, and compliance actions.
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, and recommendations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development and review of policies and procedures.


WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR   
Specifically, you will have:

 

Essential:

  • Sound working knowledge of relevant NSW legislation (e.g., Companion Animals Act 1998, Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021 and accompanying regulations)
  • Experience in animal handling and welfare
  • Strong conflict resolution and communication skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Current Class C Driver’s Licence (car licence)
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays

 Desirable

  • Certificate IV in Local Government (Regulatory Services) or Animal Control and Regulation
  • Experience in local government or regulatory enforcement
  • Experience in public education or community engagement
  • Certificates/qualifications in:
  • Traffic controller (TCR) card
  • Microchip Implanter Accreditation
  • Humane Destruction of Animals certificate
  • Category B NSW Firearms Licence
  • Eligibility as a NSW Justice of the Peace
  • First Aid Certificate
