The role

The Team Leader - Biosecurity and Invasive Species is an exciting new leadership role managing key projects and initiatives that help protect our region’s ecosystems and support sustainable land use.

This position will lead and support a team of staff and contractors, fostering their growth through mentorship and development opportunities to help them excel in their roles. Your day-to-day activities will include coordinating biosecurity and invasive species programs, such as inspecting and controlling priority weeds, managing fieldwork schedules, and ensuring all activities align with the Hunter Regional Strategic Weed Management Plan. You’ll also develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure consistent and effective practices across the team, ensuring compliance with the Biosecurity Act 2015 and the Pesticides Act 1999.

Your expertise in funding and resource management will be crucial as you prepare grant applications, oversee procurement processes, and manage budgets to deliver projects on time and within scope. Building strong networks with government agencies, industry bodies, and regional stakeholders will be essential for sharing knowledge and coordinating efforts to protect the environment effectively.

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring strong leadership experience, with a proven ability to guide, motivate, and inspire your team to achieve great results. You’ll have hands-on experience in biosecurity or invasive species management, with a strong background in project coordination, compliance activities, and stakeholder engagement. You will bring experience in grant funding, procurement, and budget management. Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities will help you balance enforcement with education and capacity building to achieve lasting community buy-in.

Salary: Commencing salary $91,806 p.a. plus superannuation (negotiable based on skills and experience).

A vehicle arrangement will be made with the successful candidate for this role. Council will provide you with a leaseback vehicle for an annual fee calculated as 20% of the gross purchase price. This is a fully maintained vehicle for both business and full private use with no additional expenses in normal use.

Location: This position will be based at our Administration Centre in Yalawanyi Ganya at 2 Biripi Way, Taree. You may also be required to be based from other Council sites across the MidCoast Council region.

Tenure: Permanent, Full Time.
