Mid North Weight of Loads (WOL) Group
The WOL Group is a collaborative partnership between 14 local councils in northern New South Wales, working together to protect and maintain the integrity of local road networks by monitoring heavy vehicle use.
Originally established in response to a growing issue of overloaded trucks bypassing highway weigh stations and damaging local roads and bridges, the Mid North WOL Group plays a critical role in upholding vehicle weight compliance under national regulations. The group operates under the guidance of the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) and supports safe, sustainable freight movement across the region.
The Mid North WOL Group employs trained Weight of Loads Officers who travel throughout the region conducting roadside inspections using portable weigh scales to assess heavy vehicle loads. The focus is on protecting infrastructure, improving road safety, and ensuring fair use of transport networks. Vehicles found exceeding legal limits may be subject to fines or enforcement actions through Revenue NSW.
Weight of Loads Officers also assist with checking compliance for large and oversize vehicles travelling on gazetted or approved routes, helping councils make informed decisions on road access permits and route planning.
The Mid North WOL Group also conduct trial weighings and offer advice on correct loading.
