The role & you
Looking to kickstart a hands-on career where you can earn while you learn and help your community at the same time? Join our Water Management and Treatment team as a Trainee and dive into a role that’s full of opportunity (and yes, sometimes water too!).
This isn’t just a job it’s a chance to build real skills in an essential industry, backed by a supportive team and a nationally recognised qualification.
What you’ll be doing:
You’ll work alongside experienced operators to learn how to:

Keep our water and wastewater systems running smoothly

Assist with repairs, maintenance, and upgrades to pipelines and treatment equipment

Respond to system issues and help manage emergency call-outs

Collect samples and learn how water and wastewater are treated

Attend TAFE and complete your Cert III Water Industry Operations (2 years)
Every day will bring something different from working outdoors with tools and equipment to learning the science behind water treatment. You’ll get hands-on experience, gain confidence, and contribute to work that really matters.

An interest in practical, hands-on work (and not afraid to get a little dirty!)

Commitment to attending TAFE and completing all training requirements
No experience? No problem! This is a traineeship, so we’ll provide all the training and support you need, you just bring the right attitude!
Please note that to be a successful candidate for this role you’ll be required to complete a pre-employment basic skills assessment and medical check (medical assessment will include a drug and alcohol test, sight and hearing, functional and medical component)
*Successful candidates will commence employment on Tuesday, 27 January 2026.
Salary: The salary for this traineeship ranges from approximately $31,288 to $53,196 p.a. in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award. Your salary will be determined based on your age, qualifications, and any previous work experience. Superannuation (12%) is additional.
An allowance of $95.34 per week will also apply. (Trainee Water Allowance)
Location: Upon commencement your normal place of work will be at the Gloucester Waste Water Treatment Plant, located on the Thunderbolts Way, Gloucester.
You may also be required to be based from other Council sites across the MidCoast Council region.
Tenure: Full-time 38 hours per week over a 24-month period.
Closing date: Monday 6 October 2025 at 11.30 pm.
