MidCoast Council is looking for a Technical Specialist Fleet – Heavy Fleet to play a key role in managing and optimising Council’s fleet of heavy vehicles, plant and specialised equipment. In this role you’ll help ensure our fleet is safe, reliable and fit for purpose while supporting essential services that keep our communities running.

Working within the Fleet team, you will help drive Council’s fleet replacement program by analysing utilisation and maintenance data, developing technical specifications, managing procurement processes, and ensuring our heavy fleet complies with safety and legislative requirements

The role

This diverse role supports Council’s fleet management operations with a strong focus on heavy fleet asset lifecycle planning. You will analyse fleet utilisation and maintenance data, develop technical specifications for new fleet assets, and assist with procurement, compliance and safety initiatives to ensure Council’s heavy fleet is operating efficiently and safely. 

You will also work closely with operational teams, suppliers and internal stakeholders to ensure Council’s fleet assets meet operational needs and legislative requirements.

What you'll be doing

Some of the key responsibilities include:

  • Analysing fleet utilisation, telematics, fuel and maintenance data to optimise fleet performance

  • Supporting the delivery of Council’s fleet replacement program

  • Developing technical specifications for heavy vehicles, plant and specialised equipment

  • Managing procurement and disposal processes for fleet assets

  • Ensuring heavy fleet assets comply with relevant safety and regulatory requirements

  • Coordinating inspections and monitoring fleet asset condition

  • Supporting fleet safety initiatives and investigations relating to fleet incidents

About You

We are looking for a technically capable and collaborative professional who enjoys working in a hands-on, operational environment while contributing to strategic fleet management outcomes.

The ideal candidate will have extensive technical knowledge of heavy fleet, mobile plant and specialised equipment, along with a solid understanding of procurement and asset management processes within the local government sector.

You will be a collaborative team member with strong communication skills, a professional and approachable manner, and the ability to work effectively within a small, high-performing fleet team.

You will also bring:

  • Relevant qualifications or extensive experience in heavy fleet management, procurement, mechanical engineering or a related field

  • Demonstrated experience analysing fleet utilisation, maintenance and condition data to inform lifecycle decisions

  • Strong knowledge of heavy fleet safety and compliance requirements, including Chain of Responsibility obligations

  • Experience working with asset management systems and Microsoft applications

  • A Class C Drivers Licence

Experience in government fleet operations, asset management systems, compliance inspections or heavy vehicle operations will be highly regarded.

Salary: Commencing salary circa $74,000 - $82,000 p.a. plus superannuation. 

Location: This position will be based at our Administration Centre in Yalawanyi Ganya at 2 Biripi Way, Taree. You may also be required to be based from other Council sites across the MidCoast Council region.

Tenure: Full-time, 4-year contract
