The role
MidCoast Council is seeking an experienced and detail oriented Finance Officer – Payroll to join our Finance team. This position is responsible for delivering timely and accurate payroll services to Council employees, in accordance with relevant industrial instruments, legislation, and internal employment protocols.
This is a key role in ensuring Council’s payroll operations are compliant, efficient, and aligned with best practices. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high level of accuracy, discretion, and a commitment to service excellence.
Key Responsibilities

Process fortnightly payroll for Council staff, ensuring timesheets are correctly submitted, authorised, and paid in accordance with Awards, Enterprise Agreements, and employment contracts.

Maintain the integrity of payroll master data, including employee records and pay classifications.

Ensure employees on Workers' Compensation are paid in accordance with legislative entitlements and internal procedures.

Assist with calculations for terminations, back pays, allowances, and annual review increases.

Reconcile and remit superannuation payments and maintain accurate superannuation records.

Maintain electronic employee leave records and assist with leave reporting as required.

Ensure all payroll-related documentation (e.g. TFN declarations, Super Choice forms) is completed and filed appropriately.

Liaise with external agencies (e.g. Centrelink, Child Support Agency) and complete statutory documentation as required.

Support audit and compliance requirements by maintaining accurate and auditable payroll records.
What you'll bring
You will bring comprehensive experience and a strong understanding of key legislation including the Fair Work Act, superannuation obligations, and Workers’ Compensation requirements ensuring precision and reliability in all aspects of payroll processing. You demonstrate accuracy, discretion, and professionalism in handling confidential information and bring proven experience using payroll systems. With strong communication skills and a collaborative approach, you work effectively within a team and meet deadlines in a high paced environment. Qualifications in payroll, finance, or business administration are highly regarded.
Salary: Commencing salary package circa $71,000 p.a. plus superannuation. (Dependent on skills and experience.)

Location: This position will be based at our Administration Centre in Yalawanyi Ganya at 2 Biripi Way, Taree. You may also be required to be based from other Council sites across the MidCoast Council region.
