The Opportunity
The financial accountant will support the Coordinator Accounting services to meet Council’s statutory reporting obligations and ensure the integrity of Council’s financial data. The position is to backfill for the Financial Accountant for a 2-year fixed term. As a Financial Accountant, the incumbent will take ownership of financial accounting functions while maintaining financial integrity through accurate reporting and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist advice and assist the Coordinator Accounting Services in the preparation of the Annual Financial Statements in accordance with relevant legislative and accounting standards and assist in preparation of information requirements of the audit process.
- Development of cashflow management through maintenance of cash receipting, investments, banking, and bank reconciliations tasks to ensure that they are carried out in an accurate, efficient and timely manner.
- Provide specialist advice and assist the Coordinator Accounting Services in tax compliance involving the preparation of FBT and BAS returns in accordance with relevant legislative and timeframe requirements.
- General ledger management including the preparation of monthly reconciliations of subsidiary ledgers and general ledger to ensure the integrity of financial data within the Councils Corporate system.
- Lead the accounts payable function to ensure timely and accurate payments of creditors.

About you
To be successful in this role you will have the following:
- A Tertiary qualification in Accounting or related discipline and progress toward CPA or CA membership and appropriate experience.
- Relevant experience in financial, management accounting and/or financial systems is required.
- Sound Knowledge of the operations of a fully integrated corporate financial management, Executive Information Systems and an understanding of database query language would be an advantage.
- A good understanding of accounting standards and regulations and its applications in the Local Government context.
- Current valid Victorian Driver’s Licence.
