About the role
Named after the Australian artist and activist Noel Counihan (1913-1986 and located on Sydney Road in the beating heart of Brunswick, the Counihan Gallery is a contemporary art space renowned for presenting a political and socially progressive artistic program. We have an impressive exhibition program, designed to increase opportunities for artists and to develop a creative, thriving arts community in Merri-bek.
We are seeking casual Gallery Attendants who can bring their passion for audience engagement and visual arts to our small but motivated team. In performing this role, your day-to-day responsibilities will be to assist with customer service and gallery events and activities. You will also contribute to gallery administration tasks, as well as exhibition installation. You will bring a positive outlook and can-do attitude to your work.
Skills and experience require to perform the role
- Ability to provide excellent customer service and attend to visitor enquiries.
- Good communication skills, with experience supporting people from different backgrounds, experiences, and abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, as well as independently.
- Experience in marketing, events and/or artwork installation, particularly in the gallery context.
- A proven understanding of safe work practices in relation to working in a gallery environment including identifying and reporting workplace hazards.
- Knowledge of contemporary art practice and issues.
- A current Working with Children Check.
- Multilingual skills and ability to communicate with visitors to the gallery who may speak a language other than English is desirable.
- Responsible Service of Alcohol, First Aid Certificate and Driver’s License are desirable.
