The Opportunity

headspace is Australia's National Youth Mental Health Foundation. The headspace mission is to deliver improvements in the mental health, social wellbeing and economic participation of young people aged 12-25. To this end, headspace aims to be the focal point for youth mental health issues across the country.

A person centred approach is at the heart of what we do. New Horizons is seeking a highly motivated and dynamic Youth Access Clinician who will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, to facilitate the day to day engagement and support of young people and their families who access headspace Ashfield.

This is a full time maximum term opportunity till November 2016. The working days are Monday and Friday with flexible starting and finishing times.  

You will report to the headspace centre manager.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Deliver services in line with customer needs, evidence informed practice, contractual requirements and organisational standards
  • Carry out assessments, case planning, therapeutic interventions and care coordination for young people
  • Support young people to access the services they need
  • Work collaboratively with the customer, family, carers and other headspace team members
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with local service providers and relevant stakeholders
  • Participate in headspace Ashfield community engagement activities
  • Ensure that practice is implemented in a culturally specific manner
  • Maintain accurate files and customer data systems in line with organisational expectations and legal requirements 

Skill and Experience:

  • Approved tertiary qualification in Psychology, Counselling, Social Work, Nursing, Occupational Therapy or other relevant field.
  • 2 years demonstrated experience in risk assessment, mental health assessment, mental health literacy education and delivery of therapeutic intervention for clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake assessment and screening of clients to determine client care needs, (and ability to make timely and sound decisions about interventions required).
  • Excellent time management, written and verbal skills and organisational skills with proven ability to prioritise, work independently and seek consultation as required
  • Experience in the provision of therapeutic brief interventions.
  • Awareness of different cultural contexts and ability to deliver culturally sensitive services.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and ability to form appropriate and effective working relationships with stakeholders, key professional bodies and clients.
  • A sound understanding of privacy legislation, confidentiality and mandatory reporting.
  • Knowledge of headspace and prior working in or with a headspace centre would be highly regarded.
  • Willingness to obtain an Australian Federal Police Check, WWCC and first aid certificate that meet New Horizons employment criteria prior to commencing with us
