Expressions of Interest: North Sydney Local Planning Panel Community Representatives

North Sydney Council is seeking expressions of interest from Community Members for positions on the North Sydney Local Planning Panel (NSLPP). The positions are open to residents living in the North Sydney Local Government Area (LGA).  

A Ministerial Direction under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 outlines the kind of applications that are to be determined by the NSLPP. The Schedule of categories guiding the types of Development Applications (DA’s) to be determined by the Panel includes: 

  • Conflicts of interest;  
  • Contentious development;  
  • Departure from development standards; and  
  • Sensitive development.  

The Panel can also be requested to provide input at a strategic level to help realise Council’s strategic planning and public domain policies, particularly in major centres like the North Sydney CBD and St Leonards. 

The NSLPP comprises four members including: the Chair (selected by the Minister for Planning), two professionals with expertise in town planning or a related field, and one community representative.   

The Panel consists of individuals who are highly regarded in their profession and who have demonstrated experience and knowledge of architecture, urban design, sustainability and planning. Community representatives with similar understanding and/or experience are now being sought for membership to the Panel.

North Sydney Council’s Community representatives must live in the North Sydney area and have knowledge of North Sydney planning issues. It is desirable for them to have the ability to act independently and preferably demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following areas: 

  • Planning 
  • Architecture 
  • Heritage 
  • Urban design 
  • Land economics 
  • Traffic and transport 
  • Law 
  • Engineering 
  • Or related profession

The appointments will be for a period of 3 years, commencing September 2025. Representatives on the NSLPP will be remunerated $1650 including GST per meeting.

There are approximately 11 meetings a year, held usually on the first Wednesday of the month. Successful applicants can expect to sit on up to 4 panel meetings for the year commencing at 10am and generally finishing by 5pm.
