About the Opportunity

The Tobacco Action Worker directly reports to the Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) Project Officer and is accountable to the Community Health Programs Manager. The incumbent will be responsible for the coordination, planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the collaboration between the Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) and Wirraka Maya Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (WMHSAC) as part of the Tackling Indigenous Smoking – Regional Grants Program.

The PAMS component of the project has a focus on the Western Desert working with members of the Newman, Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu and Kunawarritji communities, implementing, monitoring and evaluating strategies to reduce the level of smoking, and providing health information related to the risks associated with smoking including passive smoking.

About You

To be considered for this position, you must meet the below Selection Criteria:

  • Understanding of the health, social and emotional wellbeing needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Knowledge of smoking prevention and cessation programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people including providing health promotion events, group activities and one on one counselling.
  • Experience, skills and knowledge working in a multidisciplinary team, including teamwork and conflict management.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organisational and time management skills along with an ability to adapt to changing needs.
  • Sound working knowledge of computer software packages, i.e. Microsoft Office.

Desirable criteria include:

  • The person identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and is acknowledged as such by their community;
  • Tertiary qualifications in the area of health sciences, education, or equivalent experience

The position involves working with a multicultural organisation where the majority of staff, clients and stakeholders identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This position offers the opportunity to work closely with remote Aboriginal communities and make a drastic impact to the health and well-being outcomes of these communities.

PAMS operates four remote sites, three of which have a team of one nurse and a range of ancillary workers. Although the successful candidates will have a substantive location (Newman) they must be prepared from time to time to work across any one of these sites should they be required.

PAMS operates in some of the most remote parts of Australia and staff are required to be proficient at driving a 4WD vehicle and willing to fly in light aircraft.

About the Organisation

The Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service located in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia and provides comprehensive and culturally appropriate primary health care services to the Martu people of Newman and the four remote Aboriginal communities of Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu and Kunawarritji.

Our passionate and multidisciplinary team of qualified and experienced health professionals including GPs, Remote Area Nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers provide holistic and high quality health care clients throughout the region.
