About us:
Paupiyala Tjarutja Aboriginal Corporation (PTAC) is an Aboriginal corporation with responsibility for managing the essential and community services in the Tjuntjuntjara community. This includes the Community Store, Community Resource Centre, a Women's Centre, Indigenous Sport and Recreation program, an Environmental Health program, municipal services , mechanics workshop, the Community Development Program and Spinifex Health Service's.
Tjuntjuntjara Community is the main population Centre for the Spinifex Lands which covers over 55,000 sq. kms of Native Title area in the Great Victoria Desert region of Western Australia.
About the role
Using a community development and community empowerment approach, this position is to facilitate culturally appropriate sport & recreation activities within the Community; that fosters positive healthy behaviours and improves mental health and wellbeing. The role will be responsible for identifying, developing and coordinating these activities under the direction of the Program Manager. Further, during the school holiday period, the position will facilitate the provision of a range of programs aimed at school aged children to ensure that they have access to positive activities designed to reduce the risk of boredom and anti-social behaviour.
The main duties are to facilitate the following:
- Develop and coordinate active recreational and sporting games
- Increase the number of people actively engaging in some type of sporting or physical activity
- Increasing awareness around the impact of an unhealthy lifestyle (including drugs and alcohol)
- Mentor the Program’s indigenous staff
- Promote the awareness and access of available mental health services including initiating referrals
- Facilitate workshops or education sessions on positive role modelling, ‘healthy bodies healthy minds’ and other positive behavioural modification practices.
Selection Criteria
To be successful in this role, you will have a:
- Tertiary qualification in a relevant field (Mental Health/Social and Emotional Wellbeing, Welfare Studies /Social Work or Sport & Recreation).
- Demonstrated experience designing, supervising and running sport & recreation activities and school holiday programs.
- Experience working with disengaged youth and aboriginal people within a remote Aboriginal community (highly desired).
- Sound understanding of community development principles and their application in a remote aboriginal community.
- Sound interpersonal, communication and organisational skills, including the ability to liaise with a range of health services, management and health professionals, elders, and community members.
- High-level community engagement skills including planning, developing activities, consultation and partnership development.
- Proficient ability to use MS Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
Pre-employment Requirements
- C Class Manual Drivers Licence
- Current First Aid Certificate (or willing to obtain)
- Current National Police Check and Working with Children’s Check (or ability to obtain as a condition of employment)
- A genuine interest in living and working cooperatively with traditionally oriented Aboriginal people in a remote location.
