Following the recent acquisition of Pretivm, Newcrest now own and operate the Brucejack Mine located 65 kilometers north of the town of Stewart in northern British Columbia. 

The Brucejack underground mine is one of the largest and highest-grade gold mines globally and as of January 1, 2021 has proven and probable mineral reserves of 3.9 million ounces of gold (14.4 million tonnes grading 8.3 grams per tonne gold) with a mine life of 12 years.

The Opportunity:

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Second Cook- Lead Hand to join the Newcrest team in Vancouver, British Columbia.

This position requires a cook with a broad skill set, strong supervisory skills and excellent interpersonal abilities to lead our team at the Brucejack Mine.  

The Second Cook Lead Hand is an experienced cook, working in a hands-on position responsible for daily production in a remote camp serving up to 650 occupants. Taking direction from the Head Chef and First Cook the position is responsible for the smooth and safe operation of the kitchen, helping co-workers meet daily lunch and dinner production. The position requires work to be performed under minimal supervision, with some independent judgement and action required in matters which are within the framework of established procedures. 

Perform following duties, with safety being the number one priority:

  • Assisting daily menu production for lunch and dinner
  • Assist with menu planning and maintaining a high level of food quality.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area adhering to food safety and health standards.
  • Ensure food ingredients are stored in their designated area and rotated in the proper manner.
  • Provide input into catering menus and develop new menu items.
  • Work efficiently and effectively to gather, wash, cut, season, cook and store quality ingredients.
  • Assist the First Cook in maintaining accurate daily production records and complete all required documentation, reports, and logs as assigned. 
  • Advise management of purchasing requirements with a focus on minimizing waste and avoiding product shortages.
  • Proactively monitor inventory and preparing food and supply orders in coordination with the First Cook; 
  • Ensure quality and nutritional standards are met;
  • Ensure special diets are accommodated;
  • Working with your Supervisor to implement consistent prep plans, systems and efficient production schedules; 
  • Other requested duties and responsibilities to support the successful development of Pretivm Camp Services Department.

About You:

  • 3 years of kitchen or catering experience in Food Service Industry. Including, high- quality, high volume food service. 
  • Red Seal Chef culinary training or equivalent training and experience. Must be prepared to undergo red seal chef culinary training or challenge their red seal qualification examination. 
  • Considerable experience cooking for special diets such as gluten-free, vegetarian, diabetic, low fat, low sugar, etc.
  • Valid Food Safe Certification
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, organizational & supervisor skills. 

We are particularly interested in you if you are a strong leader that works well under pressure and has a broad range of experience which includes cooking within remote camps, hotel/catering and fine dining restaurant environments.  As a strong team player, you have excellent communication and leadership skills, which include the ability to create a positive team environment where everyone supports each other to be successful while maintaining high standards of service. 

please note the following physical aspects of this position: 

  • Constant standing and walking throughout the shift;
  • Frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs;
  • Frequent kneeling, pushing and pulling; and
  • Frequent ascending or descending of ladders, stairs and ramps
