Following the recent acquisition of Pretivm, Newcrest now own and operate the Brucejack Mine located 65 kilometers north of the town of Stewart in northern British Columbia. 

The Brucejack underground mine is one of the largest and highest-grade gold mines globally and as of January 1, 2021 has proven and probable mineral reserves of 3.9 million ounces of gold (14.4 million tonnes grading 8.3 grams per tonne gold) with a mine life of 12 years.

The Opportunity:

The Indigenous Cultural Alliance Committee purpose is to make recommendations to the Brucejack Leadership Team (BLT) regarding opportunities to enhance and build cultural awareness of Indigenous groups within Brucejack operations.

The primary mission of the Committee is to advise the BLT on opportunities to enhance the relationship between the broader Brucejack workforce, leadership and the indigenous workforce through introduction of Indigenous cultural elements to Brucejack and hosting culturally relevant activities at site.

The Committee shall:
a. Advise on strategic program development relevant to the mission of the Committee;
b. Advise on how best to increase the collaboration and the engagement between the indigenous and non indigenous workforce;
c. Advise on a better integration of Indigenous perspectives, knowledge, teachings, values, etc., throughout the Brucejack camp culture and lifestyle;
d. Assists the BLT in "raising the bar" in shaping the operation's strategy for incorporating Indigenous knowledge and values into Brucejack operations.
e. Support and participate in the delivery of Indigenous cultural related activities and initiatives (i.e. National Indigenous Peoples Day, Truth and Reconciliation Day, etc...).

The Committee is not a political or decision-making body. It does not intervene in the operational matters of the BLT and Brucejack operations, nor does it advise on specific decisions, orders or recommendations of the BLT, nor does it provide advice to other organizations who make quasi-judicial decisions.

The work of the Committee also does not change the policies of the Corporation nor the agreements currently in effect with the Tahltan, Gitanyow and Nisga’a Nations.

The Committee is comprised of:

A maximum of fifteen (15) members and 60% of the members must be Indigenous. However, the minimal representation must be:

  • one (1) member from Tahltan
  • one (1) member from Gitanyow
  • one (1) member from Nisga’a
  • one (1) member from Tsetsaut Skii km Lax Ha
  • two (2) members from other bands
  • one (1) member from Human Resources Department
  • two (2) members from the Brucejack Leadership Team
  • two (2) members from the Social Performance Department

NOTE: The Vice-President, Government Relations & Social Performance (Western Canada) will be invited to attend on a regular basis

Communication will be shared by email to the general workforce (all BJ site distribution lists) and a communication prepared for Supervisors to present at toolbox meetings, to inform employees of this committee. This communication will explain the purpose of the committee, why forming a committee with the focus on enhancing the alliance between indigenous employees and the employer is essential.
