About The Opportunity

The primary purpose of this position is to provide robust, people-centred leadership and practical guidance that ensures GirlGuiding New Zealand meets its health, safety, safeguarding, integrity, and
compliance obligations, while preserving the positive, adventurous and volunteer-led spirit of Guiding. This is a people-centred, volunteer-enabled environment, not a heavy industrial site safety role.

This role offers hybrid working with at least one day per week from the Auckland or Christchurch office. You will be expected to travel domestically as required to support the organisation’s commitment to a safe operating environment, so a full driver’s licence is a requirement of this role.

Reporting directly to the Management team, some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading continuous improvement of health, safety, and safeguarding frameworks
  • Providing practical guidance and support to staff, volunteers, and stakeholders
  • Supporting risk planning for programmes, events, and activities
  • Advising on compliance with legislation and industry standards
  • Overseeing incident reporting, investigations, and corrective actions
  • Delivering training, coaching, and capability development initiatives
  • Preparing governance-level reporting and risk insights
  • Managing stakeholder relationships, including regulators and external partners
  • Supporting complaint management and escalation processes

About You

The successful candidate will have:

  • Minimum of 3 years experience at a senior advisor or manager level in a health and safety role in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Strong working knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and its practical application
  • Relevant qualifications in health and safety or a related discipline
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and frameworks
  • Proven success working in complex or multi-site environments
  • Ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels
  • Demonstrated success working with volunteers, communities, or service organisations and/or not-for-profit or charity sector experience (desirable)

You will also have:

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate risk into action
  • Strong judgement and ability to apply “reasonably practicable” thinking.
  • Experience in coaching and developing non-technical stakeholders
  • A practical and solutions-focused approach to safety and compliance
