Expressions of Interest are open for Sutherland Shire residents to join our pool of rotating community representatives on the Sutherland Shire Local Planning Panel. 

The Panel is made up of four members; a chair, two independent expert members and one of the community representatives.

The Panel makes assessments and decisions about certain development applications in Sutherland Shire. Decisions are made in a manner which is ethical, professional and independent of council.

Commitment

This part-time role is scheduled to commence in July 2024, for up to three years, with the possibility of extending for an additional three.

The Panel meets fortnightly, during business hours. You do not attend every meeting as the community representative is selected periodically on a rotating roster. As well, you may be selected to make decisions on a development in your Ward

You are paid for attendance, with the pay rates set by the NSW Government.  [ Remuneration Determination – Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (nsw.gov.au) ]

Skills and Experience

Community representatives don’t need planning expertise. Your role is to ensure that the Panel has local insights and knowledge and you must have the ability to act independently.

In summary the position requires a representative who:

  • Is able to demonstrate an understanding of the planning process and assessment issues;
  • Has an understanding of Sutherland Shire and issues of concern to the local community
  • Represents and communicates local community interests
  • Attends meetings and contributes constructively to the decision-making process
  • Completes panel business in required timeframes
  • Agrees to follow the Code of Conduct for Local Planning Panel Members and the Local Planning Panels Operational Procedures.

Eligibility

  • Be a current resident in Sutherland Shire
  • Not be a property developer or real estate agent
  • Before appointment, you will be required to undergo a mandatory police check, bankruptcy check and real estate agent licence check.

Please note that the pool of rotating community representatives must include a representative from each Ward within the Sutherland Shire

Please submit a copy of your current resume and provide a written submission explaining:

  • you are a current resident of Sutherland Shire
  • you have an understanding of Sutherland Shire and issues of concern to the local community
  • you have the capacity to form independent views and to contribute constructively to the determination of applications
  • you are able to demonstrate a basic level of understanding of the planning system, i.e. knowledge of our local environmental plan, development control plan, local strategic planning statement or community strategic plan
