About the Apprenticeship:
Tweed Shire Council is proud to offer an Apprenticeship with our Water and Wastewater - Operations team to launch your career as a Mechanical Fitter. As an apprentice, you'll work alongside experienced supervisors, gaining hands-on experience while completing a Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade.
In this role, you will assist our mechanical field team with the preventive and corrective maintenance of water infrastructure across the Shire. You will also work closely with our pump fitter to help install, maintain, repair and upgrade water supply and sewerage pumping equipment. This is a fantastic opportunity to get your foot in the door and start building your career in Engineer while making a real difference in your community.
In order to meet the requirements of the Apprenticeship, successful completion of on-the-job training and studies is required.
What you'll do:
- Assist in the provision of day-to-day maintenance of all live water and wastewater infrastructure
- Contribute to the treatment and supply of safe drinking water from catchment to tap to meet community, health and environmental requirements.
- Learn technical skills and knowledge of fixed plant and mechanical equipment and processes
- Develop understanding of technical investigations to contribute to operational improvements
- Assist Pump Fitter to undertake the installation, maintenance, repairs, upgrade of all water supply and sewerage pumping equipment, fixed plant and mechanical equipment
- Learn and apply relevant Levels of Service standards and Regulations
- Assist in providing emergency response to mechanical breakdown of critical water supply and sewerage plant and equipment, under the guidance of qualified engineers.
- Receive mentorship from the Water and Wastewater - Operations team to help you succeed.

We are seeking:
We’re looking for someone who’s curious, capable and ready to get stuck in. If this sounds like you, you’re already off to a great start:
- a genuine interest in mechanical services
- finished Year 10 with solid numeracy & literacy skills and a passion for maths, sciences or even coding.
- a strong work ethic and willingness to learn
- ready to commit to completing your apprenticeship - including attending TAFE and getting hands-on experience.
- a General Construction Induction Card (White Card) – or willingness to obtain.
- a team player who can also work independently and is not afraid to get their hands dirty
- ability to work in Confined Spaces, unhygienic and potential high-risk environments
- a current driver's licence, LR, MR or equivalent (Desirable or willingness to obtain)
- a positive attitude and self-motivation
- demonstrated commitment to safety, with a strong focus on personal wellbeing and contributing to a safe team environment.

This position is based in Chinderah and can be directed to work from any Council work site.
