ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVES

Provides corporate support to our Western Canada retirement residences ensuring adherence to established environmental, IPAC and building standards.

Develops systems, policies and procedures which support compliance with legislation and a high standard of building, fire, life safety, infection control and effective maintenance practices, including laundry and housekeeping. Makes recommendations and provides support regarding capital plans, design and construction alternatives, costs, benefits, etc., to ensure cost-effective preventative maintenance, repairs, and construction. Makes recommendations and provides support regarding best practices in housekeeping, laundry and infection control related to environmental services. Supports implementation of same with Residence Leadership teams.

BACKGROUND/QUALIFICATIONS

Relevant post-secondary education such as engineering/mechanical degree or certification, is preferred. Must have broad knowledge of all aspects of mechanical and environmental services, including laundry and housekeeping as well as infection control. Must have a minimum of five years of experience in supervision of tradesmen and contractors, and be able to communicate effectively with senior staff, engineers, and architects. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to travel. Adept and proficient using computer technology and have excellent English, written and oral communication skills.

Fluency with respect to relevant building standards and legislation for the retirement sector in Western Canada.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement an assessment tool, in consultation with the Vice President, Operations – Western Canada, Regional Director of Operations, Area Managers and General Managers, which assesses each residence, at a minimum, on an annual basis against set standards and best practices.
  • Advises the Western Canada General Managers on large capital projects, supporting and assisting as required, making recommendations on quotes, scope, and priorities of projects.
  • Visits each residence at least annually or as requested, to conduct a building review to include such things as major equipment, life safety, preventive maintenance program, logs, capital projects, etc. and discusses findings and action plan with General Manager/Environmental Services Manager.
  • Conducts regular inspections of internal and external building environments and major equipment at all residences, to ensure compliance with best practices and all building, fire, and safety codes, including compliance with mandated fire training. Makes related recommendations to appropriate managers.
  • Reviews external maintenance contracts routinely and evaluates and recommends revision of contracts based on technical requirements, needs of the residence, and cost-efficiency.
  • Prepares tenders and contract templates inclusive of legislative, health and safety (i.e., WSIB, WorkSafe, etc.), insurance and liability requirements.
  • Responsible for Workplace Hazard Materials Information System (WHMIS) policies, audits, training, and other tools to ensure residences follow required practices and systems. Audits occupational health and safety programs in residences and reports to the Vice President, Operations – Western Canada, Regional Director of Operations, Area Managers and General Managers on any deficiencies or areas of non­compliance.
  • Provides training and leadership around general maintenance infection control, cleaning routines, housekeeping, and laundry.
  • Chairs the Western Region Occupational Health & Safety Committee and provides leadership on Occupational Health & Safety to the Environmental Services Managers.
  • Receives feedback and input on policies from the Environmental Services Managers and develops corporate policies, procedures and standards for retirement residences, environmental services manuals which are in keeping with best practices.
  • Responsible to ensure policies are in compliance with legislation, updating and creating as necessary, but at a minimum reviews manual once per year, and policies a minimum of every three years.
  • Provides education on policies and compliance.
  • Conducts education and audits related to environmental services with recommendations to support compliance.
  • Provides orientation to General Manager and Building Services Manager at both new and existing operations, as requested by Vice President, Operations – Western Canada.
  • Develops and/or provides in-service education programs and/or input into program development and best practices for team member educational programs on topics related to environmental services.
  • Provides input into the development of environmental services job descriptions, job routines, and staffing patterns, as requested by Vice President, Operations – Western Canada.
  • Interviews Building Services Manager by request, making recommendations to General Managers.
  • A high degree of flexibility is required in scheduling activities and priorities, and it is anticipated that the majority of time will be spent away from corporate office.
  • Must possess a current, valid, Canadian driver's license and be willing to travel using own personal vehicle, with some overnight travel required.
