WHSmith is an historic British retailer focusing on news, books and convenience, and is a renowned, competitive leader in the travel market worldwide. Our Australian operations, under which 7 brands currently operate, are rapidly expanding and since WHSmith is expected to continue this growth, we are looking for an experienced Merchandise Planner to join us on this journey. 

About the Role

The merchandise planner is responsible for achieving sales and inventory plans that meet the assigned financial targets and company objectives. Our new team member will drive the sales plan through consistent focus on studying the business and monitoring inventory and sales performance. Working closely with the buying team the merchandise planner must evaluate the existing ranges financial performance and recommend the next steps in the products life cycle management

This role will support the development and adherence to stock and ranging processes in conjunction with the Commercial and Finance teams.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Forecast sales and develop appropriate inventory targets to support
  • Analyse historical data and current trends to identify risks and opportunities
  • Work with buying and inventory teams to build OTB targets and management tools
  • Establish and maintain product life cycle management tools to reduce aged and excess inventory
  • Lead effective delivery of annual range reviews to delivery company financial targets
  • Lead monthly business review to identify opportunities to improve sales performance
  • Accurate and timely management of forecasting processes in order to achieve the best product management in our stores
  • Identify opportunities for seasonal and promotional stock pushes
  • Provide succinct, insightful, and actionable reports, analysis and recommendations on replenishment performance.
  • Work closely with development stakeholders and business users to source data and create reports to meet business needs
  • Reviewing current processes and provide feedback on potential opportunities to streamline reporting processes.

Skills & Experience

  • 3-5 years’ experience in a planning role
  • Proven experience developing effective processes
  • Experience in a Retail/FMCG environment
  • Solution focused
  • Experience with Power BI is desirable
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate initiative and drive
