Our Australian operations are quickly expanding and since, WHSmith is expected to continue this growth, we are looking for an experienced Books Buyer to join us on our journey. 

About the role 

An exciting opportunity for an experienced Books Buyer to join an international retail business. 

A key member of the Trade team, the Books Buyer will be responsible for delivering a range that suits our customers' needs and enhances our perception of quality, choice and value.    

Roles & Responsibilities 

  • Deliver a category strategy that addresses the changing behaviors of the travelling customer and delivers curiosity and excitement
  • Develop and manage a range plan that is tailored by demographic and location to deliver sales growth 
  • P&L management of the Books category, to deliver key financial metrics 
  • Account management of supplier relationships and negotiations to achieve reductions in costs of goods sold, increases in first to market launches and supplier marketing funds support 
  • Overall effective supply chain and cost management 
  • Keeping abreast of market trends, customer requirements and competitor activity, thus identifying growth opportunities 
  • Conducting range reviews and undertaking continuous improvement of the product offer through effective range analysis 
  • Creating open and effective relationships with both corporate and franchise stores through regular communication and visits 

Skills & Experience 

  • Previous retail buying experience  
  • Account management skills and experience in working with large, branded suppliers 
  • Excellent negotiation skills, particularly around cost, income and promotional support  
  • Strong commercial skills and ability to interpret the market quickly 
  • Exceptional analytical skills and ability to use data to drive business decisions 
  • Engaging and influential communication style 
  • Understanding of Profit and Loss management 
  • Proven track record of delivering key KPIs 
  • Excellent time management, planning and organisational skills 
  • Dynamic and proactive
