About Tiwi College and Melville Island

Located at Pickataramoor on Melville Island, Tiwi College is an exciting and dynamic secondary boarding school initiated and governed by the Tiwi people to provide quality education for the young Tiwi. The college caters for holistic learning; helping the young Tiwi become "work ready". At Tiwi College, the life skills learned in the Family Group Homes are valued as highly as the academic programs.

A weekly boarding school, where students are dropped off on a Monday and picked up on a Friday, the school IS the community of Pickataramoor. The school currently has over 100 students and 50 staff consisting of Teachers, Tiwi Assistant Teachers, Tiwi Academy staff, Family Group Home (boarding) Parents, Hospitality staff, a Fleet Manager, Farm Manager, Maintenance Manager and Groundsman. It is a very close-knit community and as a relatively new school, Tiwi College is well resourced for both staff and students.

Melville Island, part of the Tiwi Islands, lies in the eastern Timor Sea, off the coast of the Northern Territory, Australia. It is west of the Cobourg Peninsula in Arnhem Land and north of Darwin, with a tropical climate. Second only to Tasmania in area, it has a population of just 800 people. As a result, the tropical wilderness and secluded beaches are readily accessible, with most staff enjoying weekend camping and fishing.

Are you ready for a career change that inspires?

Tiwi College now has a rewarding opportunity for a Teacher to join their staff. This is a Junior Boy's teaching position, teaching students aged from 12-13 years of age, who have low literacy and numeracy levels.

This is a full-time role with an immediate start - initially this is being offered as a contract until the end of 2018, however extension to a permanent role is highly likely for the right person.

As the Teacher of this class, you will be primarily responsible for overseeing the curriculum planning, implementation of learning programs and the provision of the primary well-being of students in your care. You will provide initial behaviour management techniques embracing 'Calmer Classrooms', 'Restorative Practice' and Berry Street Model approaches.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking curriculum development and planning of programs with appropriate scope and sequence to meet students’ needs and government requirements;
  • Implementing specific literacy and numeracy programs adopted by the College;
  • Willingness to work within the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework/Australian Curriculum & Assessment;
  • Participating in the planning of, or direct supervision of weekly homework sessions; and
  • Driving college vehicles for student transport or as directed by the Principal or delegate.

What you need to succeed

To be successful in this position, you will need to be a tertiary qualified primary or secondary trained teacher with registration to teach in the NT and/or the ability to obtain this registration prior to commencement. Ideally you will have some previous experience in a teaching role and/or working with students who have come from difficult backgrounds, however the college is also open to speaking with recent graduates, providing they have the right attitude and cultural fit for the school.

This role will not suit someone with a disciplinarian approach. Rather, Tiwi College is looking for an empathetic, resilient and caring person who is flexible in their thinking and approach and who can adapt to changing circumstances. You will have a genuine desire to listen to and build real relationships with the young people in your care and the greater community, ensuring parents feel welcome and involved in their children's progress.

As you will be required to drive a 4WD at times, an open, manual driver's license will also be highly regarded.

Please note: Tiwi College is not in a position to sponsor overseas candidates for visa purposes and as such only Australian/NZ residents are eligible to apply. Prior to commencement you will need to obtain a current First Aid Certificate and OCHRE card.
