About the Organisation

Mala'la Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (MHSAC)  is an incorporated community controlled Aboriginal organisation that provides primary health care services and programs to the Maningrida region. MHSAC provides funding to the Maningrida health clinic and the Mala’la Flexible Aged Care Centre, alongside providing the “GREAT” Youth Services program and the Social and Emotional Wellbeing program to the community.

MHSAC’s vision is to improve the health and well-being of their people in the Maningrida community and surrounding outstations.

About the Opportunity

MHSAC now has a rewarding opportunity for a full-time Social Worker, Counsellor or Psychologist to join their team as a Therapeutic Worker. This is a full-time, permanent position based in Maningrida, NT. Maningrida is a remote, Aboriginal community in the heart of the Arnhem Land region of the Northern Territory, approximately 500km east of Darwin. 

Reporting to the Manager, Community Wellness Support Service (Wellness Centre), you will be responsible for providing assessment, intake, counselling, and case management to clients, with a focus on support and advocacy.

The majority of your clients will be self-referred from the Maningrida community. Most of your time will be spent at the Wellness Centre, however you will on occasion, also conduct home visits as required, with the assistance of an Aboriginal Support Worker.

Some of your day-to-day responsibilities will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Providing counselling to individuals, couples, and families with intentional interventions supported by sound clinical rationale;
  • Prioritising client cases according to risk and need and engaging in co-counselling as the need arises;
  • Making mandatory reports re child safety and domestic violence;
  • Providing advocacy work in the context of case management; and
  • Promoting the Wellness Centre services within the community.

About You

To be successful in this role, you must hold a degree in Social Work, Counselling, Psychology or equivalent and have current registration with a relevant professional body. In addition, you will have considerable, demonstrated post-graduate experience and a working knowledge of the case management model and service delivery for culturally diverse clientele.

Due to the remote location of the Maningrida community, the ability to live and work in a remote area will be critical to your success in this position. Any experience living/working in a remote Aboriginal community will be extremely well-regarded, however is not mandatory, providing you are aware of, and prepared for the realities of such a lifestyle.

This position would be well-suited to someone with exceptional interpersonal and written communication skills, who can quickly build trust and develop links within the Maningrida community. You will be resilient, empathetic, and have a genuine interest in experience life in a unique part of Australia and for providing support and advocacy for your clients to improve their quality of life. 

Please note: It is a requirement of this role that candidates possess an OCHRE Card, a current driver's licence and are willing to undergo a police check prior to employment with MHSAC

MHSAC will offer the successful candidate an attractive remuneration package circa $85,000, which will be negotiable based on the skills, qualifications and experience you are bringing to the role.  In addition, you will receive a wide range of benefits, including:

About the Region

Maningrida is a coastal Aboriginal community in the heart of the Arnhem Land region, located about 520km east of Darwin.
