About the Organisation

The Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) was established in 1973 to address the specific medical needs of Victorian Indigenous communities. The organisation has expanded steadily over past 40 years to provide a comprehensive range of medical, dental and social services for the community, including family counselling services; preventative health and men's health units; and community programs focused on providing assistance for people with disabilities and/or chronic health conditions in the service area.

About the Opportunity

VAHS is now seeking a full-time Workforce Development Officer to join their team in Preston, Melbourne.

Reporting to the Head of HR, this position will see you responsible for identifying workforce needs and priorities in order to design workforce development strategies which provide opportunities to build the capacity and support of VAHS employees.

Some of your specific duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Identifying strategies to ensure future organisational structure is able to support the changing and expanding workforce and professional needs of VAHS programs and services;
  • Developing and nurturing partnerships and/or strategic alliances with external training providers who may assist in any current and future training activities;
  • Supporting the current workforce to gain skills and qualifications required for their roles;
  • Undertaking an organisation-wide training needs analysis to determine current workforce capability and uncover gaps and strengths;
  • Creating opportunities for traineeships for Aboriginal people in the community to build their skills and knowledge to fulfil positions that are currently available and will become available in the future; and
  • Contributing to, and enacting, annual workforce development plans.

About You

The successful candidate will hold relevant tertiary qualifications (e.g. Business), coupled with a Cert IV in Workplace Training and Assessment. Due to the varied nature of this role, it's essential you approach your role with a strategic mindset as well as the ability to work operationally day to day.

As you'll be working within the healthcare sector, it's critical you have experience in health-related workforce development and succession planning. This includes experience in training needs analysis, and the development, implementation and evaluation of education/training within a primary healthcare setting. 

Stakeholder engagement is an important element of this role. As such, it's crucial you possess the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a variety of stakeholders. Strong negotiation skills will ensure your success in engaging and influencing key stakeholders to achieve optimal business outcomes.

In addition, it is imperative you have high level organisational and time management skills, alongside excellent written and verbal communication ability.
