Nunkuwarrin Yunti is the foremost Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation in Adelaide, South Australia, providing a range of health care and community support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

First incorporated in 1971, Nunkuwarrin Yunti has grown from a welfare agency with three employees to a multi-faceted organisation with over 70 staff who deliver a diverse range of health care and community support services.

Nunkuwarrin Yunti is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service, managed by an all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Board whose members are chosen by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

About the Opportunity

Nunkuwarrin Yunti's Link-Up Program aims to support and unite families and individuals who were removed under Australia’s past government policies and practices including people identified as Stolen Generations, adopted, fostered or institutionalised. The Link-Up Team provides culturally appropriate services including family tracing, case management, reunification, counselling, promotion state-wide and community awareness on the impacts of removals.

There exists an exciting opportunity within this community-focused Program for a Link-Up Counsellor to join the Adelaide-based Link-Up team.

The primary aim of this role is to support Link-Up caseworkers and clients on all aspects of their Link-Up journey. This role will also include supporting those clients who have been reunited as part of the program's post reunion services.

More specifically, this role will be responsible for:

  • Providing one-on-one and small group counselling services to clients referred for counselling and support from caseworkers;
  • Establishing a referral network of professional counsellors, traditional healers and relevant health professionals;
  • Participating in the planning, development, implementation and promotion of counselling services;
  • Ensuring a professional counselling environment through delivering culturally safe services to Link-Up clients and their families;
  • Ensuring compliance with the administrative and business practices that support Link-Up services; and
  • Assisting in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of relevant Link-Up client workshops and community event/activities.

Nunkuwarrin Yunti is seeking a candidate with a minimum Certificate IV qualification in Narrative Approaches, Social Work/Science, Psychology, Counselling, Mental Health or a related field.

You will also have a proven work history in counselling or a related field, along with an understanding of social and emotional wellbeing issues related to working with Aboriginal people, organisations and communities, specifically with regards to contemporary issues of their history and the effects of their forcible removal. Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is expected.

The successful candidate will have a background in individual and group counselling services, along with the ability to manage a complex clinical client caseload. You will have great interpersonal and communication skills, especially with those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent. Additionally, your ability to liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders, as well as your demonstrated commitment towards workplace diversity and participation will be essential to your success in this role.

This is a flexible position in which you may be occasionally required to complete out of hours work, and undertake some travel throughout the state, to attend reunions and community promotion activities.

Though not essential, applicants with a diploma of Narrative Therapy and registration with an appropriate professional body will be considered favourably.
