About the Opportunity 

drummond street has a fantastic opportunity for two full-time Senior Child and Family Practitioners to join the Family Services team, one in Melbourne's Northern suburbs and the other in the Western Suburbs. 

Reporting to the Family Services Manager, these roles will be responsible for providing, and supporting other practitioners to provide, high quality child and family prevention and early intervention supports. Your focus will be on families and children dealing with, or at risk of developing, child and adolescent mental health issues, with a specific focus on working with families with a refugee experience. 

Key responsibilities of this pivotal role include:

  • Designing, delivering, developing and evaluating intentional, evidence based, outreach and centre ­based programs;
  • Developing and implementing individual case plans for all cases based on sensitive and thorough assessment;
  • Provide psycho­social and skills­ based educational seminars and group work for individuals, couples and families, addressing issues relating to mental health literacy, relationships, parenting, children and young people’s mental health, wellbeing and positive development.
  • Assertively engaging client cohorts with specific needs, including those considered socially marginalised or resource poor to lessen the impact of social exclusion; and
  • Support the implementation of high quality family services practice by leading, mentoring and supervision of multi-disciplinary teams.

The successful candidate must have the following:

  • Tertiary qualification in Social Work, Family Therapy or Psychology and further training in relation to families work;
  • Have strong knowledge and experience in working with refugee families who have arrived in the last 5 years; 
  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the impact of a refugee experience on child, adolescent and adult mental health, including the risks to children’s mental health into the future;
  • Have considerable experience and understanding of trauma informed practice models in working with children and their families; and
  • Have a demonstrated knowledge and application of a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches as well as experience supporting complex cases involving issues such as mental health, family violence, and substance abuse.
