About the Customer Owned Banking Association (COBA)

The Customer Owned Banking Association (COBA) is the peak body and industry association for Australian mutual banks, credit unions and building societies. As well as acting as the lobby group for the industry on public affairs and regulatory issues, COBA also provides a limited range of professional services to members.

COBA is the industry advocate for Australia’s customer owned banking sector.  It is owned by its 72 member institutions: 51 credit unions, 3 building societies, 16 mutual banks and 2 others; and a number of affiliate members. With teams based in Sydney and Canberra, COBA aims to secure fairer regulatory settings for customer owned banking institutions and to promote the customer owned model.

About the Opportunity

COBA is now seeking a full-time Policy Officer to join its team based in Canberra. 

Reporting to the Director - Policy, this role will see you supporting COBA's policy, media and advocacy work by providing input to submissions, media statements and briefing material to assist COBA in its efforts to secure a legislative and regulatory operating environment, conducive to the interests of customer-owned banking institutions.

Key deliverables for this position will include, but not be limited to:

  • Undertaking ad hoc research tasks to support the development of policy submissions;
  • Coordinating and managing COBA's standing and ad hoc working groups on regulatory policy and sector initiatives;
  • Analysing data, such as APRA statistics, to monitor sector trends, policy issues and performance;
  • Updating financial and performance data on COBA members from various sources; and
  • Building expertise in a wide range of policy areas such as consumer credit, financial services and banking regulation.

About You

To be considered for this position you will hold tertiary qualifications in Economics, Commerce, Finance, Politics, Policy, Public Affairs or Law, and at least 1-2 years post-graduate experience in a relevant industry. Any experience working in a banking environment (ie back of house) and/or working within State or Federal Government, will be beneficial, but is not mandatory. 

You don't need to be a data analyst to be considered for this role, but you do need to have keen analytical and numeracy skills, with the ability to look at various sources of data (ie statistical databases, annual reports) and bring useful information back to COBA regarding what's happening in the market. An understanding of government decision-making processes, political processes and legislative and regulatory processes will be key to this. 

Finally, COBA is looking for someone who is organised, tech-savvy and has strong written and oral communication skills in order to effectively communicate your research findings.

This role would be well-suited to someone who has an interest in policy and policy development and is looking to build a career developing policies and influencing public policy debates.
