Context of the role

The Breathlessness Rapid Evaluation And THErapy (BREATHE) study will test the hypothesis that the implementation of a clinical algorithm for breathlessness using an electronic Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) system in primary care will improve diagnostic accuracy, symptom management and impact, and clinical efficiency compared to usual care. The primary aim is to test a clinical algorithm relevant to an Australian population that diagnoses and manages the causes of chronic breathlessness in primary care.

 

The Role

The Research Assistant will proactively participate in the design, development, testing, implementation, and documentation of the SMARThealth BREATHE. He/She will act as the liaison between the SMARThealth technical team and the Project BREATHE research team. The Research Assistant will be based in Hyderabad but should be willing and able to undertake domestic and international travel, as required. 

  

Duties and Key Responsibilities

The Research Assistant will be actively involved in the design, development,  documentation, and pilot implementation of the SMARThealth BREATHE application:

  • Assist in the development and refinement of the BREATHE CDSS prototype.
  • Act as the liaison between the research team and the SMARThealth technical team throughout the design, development, and testing of the application
  • Participate in regular meetings with the research team and the technical team and facilitate
  • Participate in consultations with general practitioners (GPs), practice nurses, and patients to obtain feedback on the CDSS and iterate the design.
  • Validate the algorithm using mock cases, online case reports, and clinical records.
  • Contributing to reports, publications, and presentations
  • Contributing to the development of funding applications and other proposals

 

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., health sciences, medical sciences, public health)
  • Appropriate post-graduate qualification in health (e.g., health sciences, medical sciences, public health) and development is preferred
  • Prior experience (at least 3 years) working in a research setting, preferably in healthcare or clinical research.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Knowledge of primary health care systems including the delivery of primary health care services is essential.
  • Experience in epidemiological, community-based, or health systems research studies
  • Experience in undertaking literature reviews, and writing for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet project deadlines
  • Availability and willingness to undertake national and international travel
  • Strong focus on quality of work and excellent problem-solving skills
  • Good interpersonal skills, organisation and time management skills.
