About the Organisation

The Spinifex Health Service is an expanding Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Service located in the Tjuntjuntjara Community on the Spinifex Lands, 680km north-east of Kalgoorlie in the Great Victoria Desert region of Western Australia.

Servicing a close knit community of around 200 - 230 people, the Health Service is managed by the Paupiyala Tjarutja Aboriginal Corporation, a non-profit community organisation with responsibility for the administration and management of Tjuntjuntjara.  

The organisation operates a comprehensive primary health service with a team of skilled health professionals including a Medical Director, visiting specialists, remote area nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers.  The Tjuntjuntjara Clinic supports regular monthly visits by our Medical Director/GP, visiting specialists and fortnightly GP clinics provided by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.  With a range of health programs and clinical services designed to meet local needs, the Spinifex Health Service presents a golden opportunity to make a difference in one of the most remote and cohesive communities in the country.

About Tjuntjuntjara

The people of Tjuntjuntjara are known today as the Spinifex People, the traditional custodians of 55,000 square kms of Spinifex Native Title Determination area. The community is situated 680km north-east of Kalgoorlie within the Shire of Menzies, approximately 10 hours’ drive from Kalgoorlie. It has a resident population of around 200 - 230 people, including the world renowned Spinifex artists. Cultural events often attract several hundred visitors.

Since establishing Tjuntjuntjara within their traditional homelands in 1989, the community has steadily grown and developed into a stable and important focus for the traditional cultural cycles of Western Desert life.  People from throughout the region with traditional attachment to the area have returned to live at Tjuntjuntjara. Despite the community’s isolation and remoteness, the Spinifex People's determination to live in their country and provide strong local governance and stability for a highly dedicated workforce makes Tjuntjuntjara a unique place to live.

About the Opportunity

The Spinifex Health Service has an exciting opportunity for a Home and Community Care Coordinator (HACC) to join their team in Tjuntjuntjara, Western Australia.

Reporting to the Health Service Manager, you'll be responsible for delivering the Home and Community Care activities and front-line services. These include, but are not limited to, meal preparation and delivery, domestic assistance, personal care, social support, assessment, care coordination, advocacy and client transport assistance.

More specifically, your day-to-day responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Ensuring meals are prepared and delivered to HACC clients;
  • Assisting people to remain independent as long as possible in their own homes with support, transport, counselling & domestic assistance services;
  • Ensuring that a range of HACC services are designed to meet the needs of Anangu and are delivered on an ongoing basis;
  • Maintaining established administrative systems and procedures;
  • Liaising with funding agencies & wider community groups;
  • Maintaining client confidentiality; and
  • Ensuring the HACC Program assets are secured and maintained.

To be successful in this role you will have previous experience as a HACC Coordinator with a service provider in a remote Indigenous community, combined with Certificate III or IV in Aged Care and Disability Services, Certificate III in Community Care or equivalent and Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (or equivalent). Additionally, you will have a good understanding of how to design, develop and implement multiple Home Aged Care and Disability Support Services.

In this interactive role, you will use your outstanding communication and interpersonal skills to build strong relationships and work in a multidisciplinary team. You will use your business administration skills and experience on a daily basis, as you prepare reports and correspondence.

Your commitment to Aboriginal Social and Emotional Well-being, combined with your passion for working with the aged and people with a disability will be keys to your success. In addition, you will have a good awareness of food safety standards, policies and procedures and be computer literate.

Importantly, you'll be flexible in your approach with a demonstrated commitment to achieving excellence in the community service sector.

A Senior First Aid Certificate, Working with Children Check - WA and National Police Clearance are essential to be considered for this role.

The people of Tjuntjuntjara are known today as the Spinifex People or Anangu [the people] locally. They lived in the Great Victorian Desert long before European settlement of Australia. Scientists have found evidence of human habitation in Central Australia that dates back approximately 25,000 years. Today the communities of Tjuntjuntjara and Ilkurlka are managed by Paupiyala Tjarutja and Pila Nguru and going from strength to strength. Both communities are major cultural centres and are moving towards economic sustainability.
