The George Institute India

The George Institute, a wholly owned legal not-for-profit Indian research institute, has been conducting research related activities in India since 2002. The George Institute India’s mission mirrors that of the parent organization, namely the discovery and implementation of solutions to chronic and disabling health problems through research, policy development and capacity building.

A number of large-scale projects in population, health systems and clinical research, funded by a diverse group of sponsors, both public and private, are conducted in India. The George Institute India comprises two distinct operating groups: Research and Development, and Infrastructure and Resources. It has two separate offices - in Hyderabad and New Delhi, where the research staff and senior management are based.

Context and Role

Anemia is a serious public health issue in India with one of the highest prevalence among women of reproductive age (WRA) globally. Despite the targeted and concerted effort, anemia prevalence has shown an increasing trend over the past decade. Anemia control programs have traditionally targeted pregnant women through nutritional interventions, whereas non-pregnant women and young girls out of school with equally high prevalence of anemia are left behind. To our knowledge, there is a need for comprehensive research to understand underlying causes of anemia in different population groups and not just its burden and generate empirical evidence to inform intervention and implementation strategies for improving women’s health.

Tripura, one among the North Eastern states of India, has the highest prevalence of WRA in the region (67.2%). To address this issue in WRA a multi-sectoral intervention at health system and community level will be implemented by assessing the contextual factors affecting anemia in different population groups. We expect that the study findings will provide evidence-based methods to reduce anemia and the knowledge generated can be utilized to achieve Anemia Mukt Bharat and WHO Sustainable Development Goals.

The Project Assistant will be responsible for implementing and managing the intervention including coordinating field activities, supervising the implementation team, monitoring the activities, and facilitating stakeholder engagement. 

Reporting Relationships

Directly reports to Senior Research Fellow – Women’s Health

Duties and Key Responsibilities

The Project Assistant would be expected to:

• Perform project management role, ensuring successful implementation of the project
• Liason with the district and state stakeholders within and outside the health system
• Assist in training and capacity-building activities for field teams and health system staff involved in the intervention.
• Coordinate and monitor the implementation of the intervention
• Contribute to stakeholders meeting and roundtable discussion  to disseminate the research findings.
• Provide regular updates to the project team and management on study progress, challenges, and proposed solutions.
• Manage project documentation, including maintaining email correspondence, meeting records, and administrative tasks.
• Prepare reports and presentations
• Ensure compliance with ethical guidelines and research protocols throughout the study.
• Contribute to  to peer-reviewed publications

The Project Assistant should also:

• Contribute to Women’s health program India’s activities

As a Team Member:

• Participate in team meetings and activities related to the projects and the institute as a whole
• Participate in special projects to improve processes, tools, systems and organisation
• Take responsibility for personal learning and development and for setting achievable and meaningful work objectives and managing personal targets, meeting obligations of the Institute’s Performance Management and Development Policy
• Demonstrate commitment to GI’s values, including performing to an exceptionally high ethical standard and focus on integrity, collaboration and teamwork in all efforts.

Work, Health and Safety

• Comply with GI’s Work Health and Safety Policy and related procedures, and similar policies which apply when visiting the premises of affiliates and collaborating sites.
• Promote and contribute to a safe, secure environment for staff and visitors.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

• Post graduate degree in public health/social work/rural studies
• Atleast 3-4 years of work experience in public health
• Experience in managing projects, leading teams, working with health system or government such as National Health Mission (NHM)
• Experience in data analysis using STATA, SPSS or NVivo is desirable
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and knowledge of  local tribal dialect or Bengali.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well flexibly, i.e.  engaging with research teams.
• Demonstrated capability to produce outcomes and achieve objectives within agreed time periods.
• Strong problem solving, analytical skills, and proven strategic thinking.
• Demonstrated resourcefulness, with ability to influence others to achieve common goals.
• Excellent team-work skills, with demonstrated ability to collaborate in small teams and with a wide range of varying stakeholders.
• Ability to demonstrate flexibility and to be adaptable to changing organisational priorities and ambiguous environments.
• Strong focus on producing the highest quality of work and on ensuring optimum accuracy of outputs;
• Well organised and efficient, with the capacity to work under pressure.
